Advent & Christmas Services & Activities
Advent Quiet Morning
Saturday, November 26th – 9:30am-12:30am – Led by The Rev. Marilyn Hames, Honorary Priest at St. Philip’s Dunbar.
Seasons of the Soul: For everything there is a season,… a time or season for everything under the sun according to Ecclesiastes 3. As the title suggests, we will explore the Seasons of the Soul, what each offers and what each needs, so that we can grow spiritually and appreciate whatever stage we have reached on life’s journey. That way, wherever we are, we can embrace it as all part of having the time of our life. Worship will be woven into the sessions, including a closing Iona-style Eucharist, leaving times to relax and reflect too. Plan to attend. Register at the church office by phone at 604-261-4228 or by email at secretary@stmaryskerrisdale.ca.
Advent Wreath-making
Sunday, November 27th – after the 9:15am service.
This is a St. Mary’s tradition for the young – and the young at heart! Join your parish family in the gymnasium during coffee time to make your own Advent wreath.
Advent Lessons & Carols Service
Sunday, November 27th at 7pm – ‘O’ is for Advent with the St. Mary’s Choir.
No, it’s not a typo! The quintessential Advent hymn is “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, based on the Magnificat antiphons used at Vespers in the last seven days of Advent. Each antiphon is a name for Christ, one of his attributes mentioned in Scripture. As in previous years, we will process the Advent banners with a setting of these antiphons, and with readings and music that reflect the prophecies that hail the coming Christ. A wonderful way to begin the Advent season.
Advent Study Series
Tuesday evenings: November 29th, December 6th, 13th and 20th – Listening with the Heart: Meditations on Scripture. 7pm in the lounge.
In this series we gather together to meditate on Holy Scripture using the readings and questions from a Taize source. Our Holy Reading of Scripture will include a group discussion on what the Holy Spirit is saying to us today from these ancient sources, the Gospels. We will follow the Christmas story and touch on themes of peace, fear, awe and joy. Please register with the church office by phone at 604-261-4228 or by email at secretary@stmaryskerrisdale.ca.
Créche Service
Saturday, December 3rd at 5pm
This all-age, interactive prayer service uses the image of the crèche to imagine who is in God’s Great Family. It is a perfect service to invite your family and neighbours. We will gather around a new piece of art designed by our artist in residence, John Rosenthal. We conclude the service by sharing star cookies.
Wonder Sunday
Sunday, December 4th at 9:15am
As we have done this Fall, we worship in an accessible way so that the children in the Sunday School can join us in worship. This is a way to practice being young-at-heart as we all wonder together about what God might be saying to us through the Gospel reading this morning.
Centennial Year Finale – Universal Gospel Choir
Saturday, December 10th at 7pm
The Universal Gospel Choir will bring in the Yuletide season with a concert at St. Mary’s filled with a heart-warming, soul-filling mix of Gospel, Sacred World music and Christmas songs. This is a concert not to be missed! For more information, please contact the church office at 604-261-4228 or by email at secretary@stmaryskerrisdale.ca.
Christmas Special Eucharist & Tea
Wednesday, December 14th at 2pm
This service of Holy Communion is especially to allow those who find it difficult to attend services in the church to offer thanks in prayer and hymns and to share in Communion amid the beauty of the Christmas decorations at St. Mary’s. A team of drivers are happy to offer transportation. Don’t miss this wonderful service! Please contact the church office by phone at 604-261-4228 or by email at secretary@stmaryskerrisdale.ca for more information.
